Janelle Brown ‘Outgrew’ Kody Brown Before Split
Rumors continue to swirl that Janelle Brown has called it quits with Kody Brown. The Sister Wives couple has been clashing throughout the current airing season of the TLC series, only fueling reports that the mom of six is currently living without her spiritual husband.
“Janelle is a strong independent woman and realized she can do it on her own,” a source dished to In Touch.
The insider added that the TLC star, who spiritually wed Kody in 1993, “outgrew him.”
Fans know that Kody and Janelle’s relationship began to crumble amid the COVID-19 pandemic after Kody’s strict protocols divided the family. Janelle even told the patriarch to “f**k off” during a particularly testy filmed exchange, as the couple debated how to celebrate the 2020 holiday season.
The relationship reportedly continued to deteriorate, and in January 2022 an insider confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple’s breakup was imminent. Kody’s third wife, Christine’s departure from the family only encouraged Janelle to go it alone as well. Janelle steadfastly supported Christine’s decision to leave, which only heightened tensions with Kody.
Janelle and Kody, who remains spiritually tied to Meri Brown and legally married to Robyn Brown, also butted heads over living arrangements amid Janelle’s effort to speed up the building process on the family’s plot of land, Coyote Pass. Kody’s estranged relationships with two of the couple’s sons only added to the marital strife.
During a personal interview, featured last season, Janelle revealed that she was seriously questioning if she really wanted to stay in the plural marriage.
“I’ve caught myself in the last few weeks really reflecting and being like, ‘OK, look: Do I still choose plural marriage?’” Janelle said. “Yeah, I still choose it, but I’ve had to [make] that conscious decision with myself.”
“My children are almost grown and there’s not a huge necessity anymore to stay,” Janelle added. “With Kody and I right now, our relationship is pretty strained. And you know, it’s easy to walk away.”
Christine’s aunt, Kristyn Decker, told In Touch last month that Janelle left Kody “a long time ago.”
“As far as any relationship, any marriage goes, I think [Janelle’s] similar to, in Meri’s situation where she’s just staying in a marriage that’s not really a marriage,” Kristyn told the outlet. “I don’t think they’ve had a marriage for a long, long, long time. It’s just platonic.”
Kristyn explained that the Browns’ fundamentalist Mormon religion, Apostolic United Brethren, judges men who leave their plural marriages much more harshly than the wives who choose separation. Kristyn alleged that Kody pushed Janelle away to take the heat off himself.
“That’s why [Kody] wants them to leave,” Kristyn claimed. “If they’re going to, if they kick him out, then they are looked down upon much worse. Kody’s got to get them to [leave on their own].”
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
