Whitney Thore announced that her mother passed away on Wednesday after suffering a stroke.
Whitney shared in a heartfelt Instagram post that her mother Barbara passed away on December 7 surrounded by her family. The My Big Fat Fabulous Life star explained that her mother had “cerebral amyloid angiopathy, which is an untreatable progressive condition caused by proteins in the blood vessels of the brain.” Whitney added that this condition caused Barbara to suffer several strokes — one in 2017, 2021, and the most recent one on November 13.
Barbara passed away at age 76 and left behind two children, Whitney and Hunter, and her husband, Glenn. The TLC star added that her mother was her family’s greatest gift.
“Her southern charm, her hilarious sense of humor, her well-timed witty remarks, her beauty, and her ability to make everyone around her feel comfortable and cared for,” Whitney wrote. The entire family stars in TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life which follows Whitney’s pursuit of love. Thore added that she was the luckiest person to have been “hers for almost 39 years.”

Whitney continued, “What you can’t possibly understand is the extent of my mother’s love — what you may have witnessed and felt through a TV screen is a minute fraction that, even if multiplied by a million, wouldn’t come close to “real life.” That’s how enormous, how generous, and how all-encompassing my mother’s love was.”
In her post alongside throwback photos of her mother, Whitney also thanked the TLC fans for loving Barbara so much.
“She delighted in her newfound television career more than we can describe! It gave her such a sense of purpose and excitement and something to look forward to every time the crew came around.”
The My Big Fat Fabulous star added that fans’ support made her feel very loved and encouraged. Whitney finished the post, saying, “We are unbelievably thankful that we’ve been able to share her with you and it is our hope that her memory will continue to be a source of comfort and happiness for the rest of your lives, just as it will be for ours. I love you Mommy.”
Fans showed their support for Whitney and her family during this tough time in her comment section. Whitney has shared several photos and videos of having fun with her mother on her Instagram. Barbs’ health struggles have also been documented in episodes of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, which aired its season 10 finale in October.
