Sherri Shepherd Claims She ‘Didn’t Want To Take Over’ Wendy Williams’ Show Amid Poor Ratings!
Sherri Shepherd is opening up about how scared she was to take over Wendy Williams‘ spot on daytime television!
Sherri, 55, dropped by ‘The View’ on Friday to talk about her new self-titled daytime show. Shepherd was a host on The View from 2007 to 2014 and had a blast catching up with the ladies. Sara Haines asked Sherri what she did to prepare for her new show before inquiring about what advice Oprah Winfrey told her. “What did she say?” she asked. Sherri gave the audience all the details that led up to her conversation with the TV legend. “At first she texted me, and she’s like, ‘Oprah here, and I’ve been trying to get in touch with you. I guess, you know, it’s hard. We gotta make a time to get together.’”
The comedian added that when she finally spoke to Oprah, she was so nice. “And we talked for about 49 or 59 minutes, and the big things that she said to me, she said, ‘Don’t worry about the ratings.’” Sherri also said that Winfrey told her the main thing she needs to focus on is her passion and enthusiasm for her job. “Energy that you give off is what the audience will give back to you. So it’s all about your energy. You’re responsible for the energy. You’re responsible for the show, it’s your name.”
Sherri said on Friday that even though she loved talking to Oprah about her show, the experience was too much. She admitted, “She scared me. I was like I don’t want to do it now, Oprah!” Sherri’s show premiered in September, and so far, she says it is so much fun hosting. She also said Oprah texts her once in a while to tell her how great she’s doing and to “keep it up.” Sheri also got advice from her former ‘View’ co-hosts like Whoopi Goldberg, who told her, “It’s never about you, it’s always for someone else. So, take it off of you and know that you’re taking people on a journey.”
Joy Behar told Sherri, “The moment you open up your mouth, half the world is going to hate you.” Before her show began, Sherri spoke to The Daily Mail and said that she doesn’t feel any pressure to replace Wendy Williams. “I only feel pressure to go out there and be authentically Sherri. I put pressure on myself to make sure I’m bringing my best self each time I step onto that set. Making sure I can offer people one hour of joy, laughter and inspiration is the only thing I’m worried about.”
