Kim Plath & Barry Call Off Divorce After Her DUI Arrest?
Welcome to Plathville couple, Barry and Kim Plath, appear to be headed for divorce, but Kim’s recent DUI arrest may prove to be a game changer.
Lots of rumors surrounding the couple’s breakup have been circulating in recent months, including the idea that Kim had possibly left her husband for another man.
In June, the TLC stars spoke to PEOPLE, via a statement, about their decision to end their 24-year marriage.
“After considerable thought and discussion, we have decided to end our marriage,” Kim and Barry announced. “While this was not an easy decision, we know it’s the best choice for both of us. We have been through many highs and lows in our 24 years of marriage and as we navigate this new chapter in our lives, we will co-parent our amazing children.”
Barry and Kim share 9 living children—Moriah, Ethan, Hosanna, Micah, Lydia, Isaac, Amber, Cassia, and Mercy Plath. Their son, Joshua, died at the age of 17 months.
The popular reality show featured the couple’s marriage as a main storyline during Season 4, as well as their joint decision to separate and live apart.
“I can’t help but feel a little betrayed,” Barry, 54, said during a June episode. ”One thing I thought wouldn’t ever be shaken was us. Now it’s totally shaken up. It’s just really sad. It’s a tragedy.”
Barry asked Kim why she was acting “selfish,” and Kim replied — “Do you want me to stay knowing that I’m not happy?”
Kim opened up in a personal interview, commenting—“He’s, if anything, saying that it’s selfish for me to want to be in a healthy marriage as if I don’t have the right to be happy or the right to be in a healthy marriage as if I don’t matter — which is why we are where we are.”
Kim was arrested on Thursday for driving under the influence in Florida. The 50-year-old turned herself into the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office in response to a warrant connected to a June accident. The incident involved both personal injury and property damage, according to docs obtained by InTouch Weekly.
Documents described a “single vehicle crash” recorded on June 10 at 11:52 pm. A police officer stated that a vehicle “overturned” after making a left hand turn, landing on “its roof in a ditch (filled with water.)”
The mother of nine was “still in the driver’s seat” when she received aid from a witness and the police officer.
Kim “appeared to be intoxicated and had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath and person,” the report stated.
Police also noticed lacerations and scrapes on the reality star’s face.
“Ms. Plath was in a cervical collar and was sitting up on the stretcher as she was brought into the Emergency Room,” the report stated. “Ms. Plath was conscious, appeared to be in a daze and had very red glassy eyes. Ms. Plath displayed Ptosis (droopy eyelids) and Mydriasis (dilated pupils).”
Kim said that she consumed “two 12-ounce margaritas” in her first statement, but then claimed that she had “nothing” to drink, when asked a second time.
“On September 3, 2022, I received the toxicology report from FDLE Lab,” a statement said. “The results of the blood test for Ms. Plath was a .161 and .162 BAC [blood alcohol content.] I completed a Warrant Affidavit on Ms. Plath for DUI (Property Damage), 316.193.3c1 and issued a UTC for Careless Driving.”
Kim’s arrest sparked speculation that an alleged drinking problem might be at the root of the TLC mom’s decision to walk away from her marriage. The development raises questions regarding how a potential course of treatment could affect the couple’s relationship and their decision to proceed with the divorce.
