‘Teen Mom OG’ Amber Portwood Loses Custody War with Ex Andrew Glennon — Claims Mental Illness was ‘Used Against’ Her!
Teen Mom OG star, Amber Portwood, has lost custody of her 4-year-old son, James, after a lengthy custody battle with her ex, Andrew Glennon. James will soon move to California with his father and away from the MTV star, who lives in Indiana.
Andrew and Amber welcomed James in May 2018, one year before calling it quits on their relationship.
The Sun reported Wednesday that an Indiana court ruled in Andrew’s favor, and will allow him to relocate with James to his family’s $5 million estate in Malibu.
The judge granted Andrew, 38, sole legal and primary custody of their son, ordering him to “seek out and consider the mother’s opinion before making any major decisions relating to the child’s medical treatment, education and religion.”
Amber, 32, has not been allowed overnight visitation with James since her 2019 domestic violence arrest. The new custody agreement, which will be implemented in phases, allows Amber overnight time with her son. The MTV mom will be allowed monthly visitation with her son, and the time will be split between California and Indiana.
Her first three day visitation period will take place in California, and Andrew will bring James to Indiana, the following month. Visitation will increase to five days during the second phase. The time period is yet to be determined for phase three. The document notes that “mother will have parenting time pursuant to the Indiana parenting guidelines with distance as a major factor based upon the age of the child.” The visitation phases are designed to help James adjust his the new routine.
The judge also ordered that both Amber and Andrew submit to monthly drug testing for six months. Amber was ordered “to participate in individual counseling with the counselor of her selection and follow any recommendations made by the counselor.”
The former couple’s custody war began in 2019, after the reality star was arrested for allegedly attacking Andrew with a machete. Andrew was then awarded primary physical custody but shared joint legal custody with his ex. The reality star pleaded guilty in October 2019 to domestic battery, criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon and domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old. The Indiana native was ordered to attend parenting classes and sentenced to probation.
Amber went live on Instagram after news broke of Andrew’s custody win, where she told fans and followers that she was staying “positive.” She added that she didn’t think that her past should be used against her as long as she’s working to stay on the right track.
Amber, who has been outspoken about her struggle with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, spoke about her “great” relationship with her 13-year-old daughter, Leah, whom she shares with her ex, Gary Shirley. She added that James repeatedly tells her “I love you,” during their time together.
