Pedro Jimeno makes the first move toward a divorce from his wife, Chantel Everett Jimeno, on Monday’s episode of The Family Chantel.

Pedro tells his wife that he wants a separation, but Chantel is not on board.

The currently airing season of the TLC show has been documenting the breakdown of the couple’s marriage. In a preview clip from Monday’s episode, Pedro calls the separation “the smart thing” to do in light of their constant arguing. Chantel shares that she feels “pathetic” due to her “begging” for his attention, and Pedro remarks that Chantel makes everything “worse.”

“What kind of response were you thinking?” she asks him. “‘I’m glad we’re getting a separation, this is going to really help our relationship?’ I don’t know anyone who’s separated and gotten back together, baby, I don’t. How is separating going to help us? It’s ignoring the problem and drifting further apart.”

Pedro isn’t sold and reiterates a need for a solution for their daily arguments. He explains in a confessional spot that his relationship with Chantel changed after he began his real estate career, which allowed him to meet a new group of friends.

“I need time to know and realize what I want in my life, you know? If we want to make the relationship work or not,” he says. “You know you need to find your own happiness sometime. Maybe I need to have my own future without you.”

Chantel and Pedro connected in person for the first time in Pedro’s native Dominican Republic, where they got engaged. TLC cameras chronicled Pedro’s arrival to the United States on a K1 visa, which allowed the couple 90 days to decide whether or not to tie the knot. The pair wed in 2017, amid family drama and eventual physical fights.

The popular 90 Day Fiancé alums made the decision to split, in May. Pedro filed for divorce on May 26 but claimed that they had been separated since April 27. The TLC star said that their marriage had become “irretrievably broken.”

Pedro accused Chantel of transferring cash from a joint account only days before they split, in an emergency motion. Chantel stated in court documents filed earlier this month that she was ending the marriage for reasons that included adultery and “physical domestic violence, as well as mental pain.”

Court documents revealed that a mutual restraining order was filed on the same day that Pedro filed for divorce.

Chantel responded to Pedro’s filing on June 7 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, agreeing that their union was “irretrievably broken with no hope of reconciliation.”

The Family Chantel airs Mondays at 8 pm, ET, on TLC.
