Farrah Abraham appeared on This Life Podcast with Dr. Drew, and had some interesting things to say about her mother, Debra Danielsen. The mother/daughter duo serves up plenty of intense drama on Teen Mom OG, and Farrah believes that Asperger Syndrome might play a part in Debra’s behavior patterns.

“I’m going to say something now that is a boundary issue and we can pull it out of this show if you want. I was just looking at your mom and have gotten to know her over the years too and I’m just worried there’s something psychiatrically going on there that’s not being properly managed,” Dr. Drew asked, adding, “Am I on to something?”

Farrah sharply pointed out that her mother is currently dating a doctor, before Dr. Drew continued.

“I’m thinking there’s something really there that you’ve been pounding against your whole life and your mom isn’t aware it’s there and it’s of a psychiatric nature…” Dr. Drew said. “Not psychological but more like biological and you’re wanting something from her that she just can’t do because of this biology. Am I on to something here?”

“That is what it is,” Farrah responded. “That’s what I know now and I’m done with conversations and I’m done with fighting the uphill battle… I’ve researched so much about my mother that I think she has Asperger’s and has some other things.”

According to aspenj.org.

  • Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum.
  • Individuals with AS and related disorders exhibit serious deficiencies in social and communication skills. Their IQ’s are typically in the normal to very superior range. They are usually educated in the mainstream, but most require special education services.
  • They desire to fit in socially and have friends, but have a great deal of difficulty making effective social connections. Many of them are at risk for developing mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression, especially in adolescence.

Dr. Drew prodded Farrah for more insight — noting that he “agreed” with her, before clarifying his position.

“I’m qualifying this. I’m not sitting in assessment of your mom. I’m not her doctor but I’ve been concerned there’s something on the schizoaffective spectrum,” Dr. Drew said.

The Mayo Clinic defines schizoaffective disorder as “a mental disorder in which a person experiences a combination of schizophrenia symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions, and mood disorder symptoms, such as depression or mania.”

What do you think about Farrah and the MTV doc’s assessment of the controversial reality grandmother? Did they nail it?

Teen Mom OG airs Monday nights, on MTV.
