Amber Marchese, newly retired star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, is speaking out about her decision to exit the show, citing “little control” as one of the reasons she and husband, Jim Marchese, made the decision to call it quits.

“Jim and I have been giving Real Housewives of New Jersey a lot of thought and given the current state of affairs regarding our personal lives and the direction of the show, we officially decided to move on,” Amber said to Us Magazine. “The show was not what we expected it to be, and I want to pursue more endeavors.”

Of course, anyone who tuned into the first season of RHONJ and saw Teresa Giudice’s table-flipping antics while shouting, “Prostitution whore,” might have realized the extent some people will go for attention. Amber, who is currently fighting breast cancer for a second time, clearly has her priorities in order. She explains the ramifications of being on the show didn’t sink in until after she watched the season.

“I was picked on a casting call while pursuing acting,” Marchese, 38, says. “I approached the show as an actress wanting to make producers happy. I wanted to make Andy [Cohen] happy. I had little control over content, situations, or what they decide to show the viewers. The ramifications of that did not sink in until after I watched the show. That is not Amber on any level.”

Despite having rocky relationships with RHONJ twins Teresa Aprea and Nicole Napolitano, the mom of four fostered genuine friendships with Jacqueline Laurita and Melissa Gorga.

“We’ve spoken and hung out during the summer, and even when the cameras weren’t on, she would have tears in her eyes,” she said of Melissa Gorga. “You have to understand, we’ve known each other since we were kids, so for her to see me go through that, she was legitimately upset.”

Former costar, Jacqueline Laurita, was also supportive of  Marchese’s departure from the show,

“Jacqueline has been absolutely amazing,” Marchese told Radar. “She has been a wonderful friend and she is constantly sending me texts throughout the day or calling me just asking me how I am. She’s been very positive in this whole thing.”
