Brooks Ayers split with The Real Housewives of Orange County star, Vicki Gunvlason, two months ago, but the drama that has swirled around their relationship isn’t over. Ayers continues to fend off accusations from Gunvalson’s reality co-stars, some of whom believe that he faked his cancer battle on the recently concluded season of the show.

Ayers sat down with E!, and gave his side on the drama that smothered the Bravo show this season.

“I don’t fight like those ladies fight,” Ayers said. “They fight below the belt.”

Ayers also added that he “absolutely” sticks to his claim of being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“Unfortunately, I wish it wasn’t true. It would be a lot easier if I didn’t have cancer, just to be honest with you,” he explained, and spoke of the difficulties of  “the daily grind, the routines of reminding yourself that I’m sick and I need to do certain things and not do certain things.”

Ayers also spoke about his breakup with Vicki, and shared that tension with Gunvalson’s daughter, Briana, contributed to the breakup. He added that he and Vicki went to a “reality TV couples counselor,” hoping to save the relationship, but the attempt ultimately failed.

“We made the decision that we probably weren’t going to be forever,” he commented. “Given the fact that Tamra [Judge] made the comments that she did after Season 9 that this was going to be Vicki’s year in the ‘box’ so to speak, it made me an easy target.”

Brooks was pummeled by doubts and accusations during the season, most notably by rookie, Meghan King Edmonds. To avoid another cast thrashing, he chose to decline a reunion appearance, instead sitting down with Andy Cohen for an hourlong interview.

“I was worried that we weren’t going to get anywhere with the Brooks conversation. But I think we did,” Cohen said of the interview. “It’s interesting to hear his side of everything. There’s nothing that I didn’t address with him, and he has an answer for everything.”

When asked if he planned to watch the three part reunion, Ayers joked, “with one eye open, and both ears closed.”

After last night’s dreary ramblings, Ayers may actually may be onto something!
