Caroline Stanbury, our resident villainess on Ladies of London, is dry, funny, and can be charming when she chooses. But she wields that sarcastic, British humor like a blunt weapon sometimes. This week, Julie Montagu feels the pain of Caroline’s verbal battering.

Julie meets up with Caroline, seeking business advice. But Caroline is going through her own financial crisis.

“Gift Library was my absolute baby, I had built it from nothing by myself. … I was super impressed by Julie’s business pitch, she was super organised but I needed to take time out and concentrate on trying to save my own business.”

Caroline calling Julie “brainless” doesn’t help her feel good about JUB’s business plan, but that is Caroline’s way. Part of her personality can be put down to the old stiff upper lip—the cultural differences are real, y’all—but part of it is the icy veneer Caroline wears like a suit of armor.

“Like with most things I internalize my feelings and put up these barriers, I’m sorry if everyone thinks that it’s cold but I almost go into a shell and have to make sure I come back out fighting.”

When Lady Julie and Baroness Caroline Fleming do headstands at the New Year’s Eve dinner party, they open themselves up to ridicule. Here’s the deal though — Caroline Fleming isn’t bothered by what Caroline Stanbury or anyone else has to say. She’s Danish royalty. She grew up with the privileged aristocracy. Those barbs bounce right off her. Julie—not so much. So when Caroline S. teases Julie about her yoga skills, well, shit gets real. Julie breaks down in tears.

“Clearly I didn’t think they were a dig at Julie. There was two drunk women at the end of the table doing headstands, you can hardly take that seriously.”

Now we get to the good part, where the ladies don animal onesies. Caroline gets to play the unicorn of course, because she’s the queen of everything. Ever. Caroline is that friend from high school, the one who purposely spiked you with the volleyball in gym class, but claimed it was an accident. The one who dated your ex and blew it off, like it was no big deal. The one who flashed pictures of you from seventh grade, when you were wearing a bad perm and headgear! Ahem. My point is, Caroline points the finger at other’s bad behavior and never worries about her own. So when she straddles Juliet’s husband in her unicorn costume and humps his face, she doesn’t see anything wrong with her behavior. She just being that friend.

“No, it was New Year’s Eve, everyone was drunk. I wanted everyone to join in with the fun. Looking back it probably was poor judgement but it was all done in good humor.”

I don’t expect Juliet to give Caroline the verbal beat down she deserves, mainly because Juliet is still trying to make it on the London social scene. That is magic eight ball prediction, anyway. So what do you think? Is Caroline a mean girl or is it all in good fun?
