The season four opener of “American Horror Story: Freak Show” did not disappoint, y’all. Ryan Murphy did not disappoint. Freak show delivered with a terrifying clown that murders, kidnaps little boys and young women. The setting is Jupiter, Florida in the 1950’s and the killer clown hunts his prey in the marshes and fairgrounds around Jupiter, Florida. Talk about CREEPY! This killer clown will give you nightmares to last a lifetime. I warn you now, this show is not for the faint of heart!
The season 4 premiere episode kicks off with Sarah Paulson. She’s back and this time around she has two heads (conjoined twins.) Initially, we only see one Sarah. Then we flashback to her past. The producers give us some background on the character. It begins with a milkman stumbling upon a terrifying crime scene at a farmhouse. He finds a dead woman on the kitchen floor and something hiding in a closet. And after a series of gasps of astonishment, Dot and Bette emerge.
Nobody knew that the conjoined twins existed because their mother kept their existence a secret from the town. The twins became the number one suspect in the murder of their mother – and for good reason. While they initially tried to lie about what happened, it was revealed that Bette freaked out and stabbed her mother after she refused to let them leave the house. Bette desperately wanted to go to the movies, and couldn’t handle being told no anymore. Dot failed to stop her, and stabbed her sister in the chest as part punishment, part cover up.
Dot and Bette are rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The doctors treat the twins like “freaks” of nature. It’s the 1950’s and not many cases of conjoined twins existed. It’s here, Elsa Mars (Fionna is back) makes her grand entrance. She arrives at the hospital to “rescue” the twins. Elsa runs a freak show, “Fräulein Elsa’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” which recently moved to Jupiter, Florida. The show is struggling and Elsa has big hopes of turning the freak show around by attracting new customers with fresh acts. She has her eyes set on Dot and Bette as her saving grace. However, the townspeople hate the freaks and want to send them packing back to where they came from.
Twisty the Clown made his first brutal appearance while two young lovebirds tried to enjoy a romantic picnic when out of nowhere, Twisty the Clown appeared. Twisty first showed the young woman a couple of tricks before brutally attacking her and her boyfriend with juggling pins. But unfortunately that wasn’t the most horrifying part of Twisty the Clown’s attack. He then proceeded to stab the boyfriend repeatedly in the stomach and then chased after the girl when she tried to run. I told you this was not for the faint of heart.
Lets head to the big top. The performers at the freak show, include a legless woman, a tiny woman named Ma Petite and many others with deformities. There’s even a “freak” who bites heads off of living things. Jimmy Darling aka Lobster Boy might try to hide his deformity from women that he’s interested in, however his hands do attract some wanted attention from the opposite sex. Lobster Boy doesn’t just perform at the freak show – he also performs on women on the side. Jimmy’s a hired act that attends parties thrown by local women, using his hands to provide them with a much needed “service.”
Circling back to Twisty the Killer Clown. He struck again. This time murdering a husband and wife while they lie in bed, asleep. However, Twisty the Clown didn’t kill their young son. Instead, he chose to kidnap the little boy. Imagine waking up to a killer clown standing over your bed? Yikes! In broke-down bus hidden in the woods, Twisty is holding two living victims in cages, the girl from picnic (he killed her boyfriend) and the young boy from the second attack. He first performed tricks for the pair and the woman pleaded with him to set them free. Twisty chuckled at her proposal and continued on with his circus tricks. But when that balloon popped, he went ape sh*t crazy. Twisty flew into a violent rage, throwing anything nearby at his hostages. Thank God they were in cages.
Back at the Freak Show, a detective has come calling. He’s there to arrest Dot and Bette for the murder of their mother. At the same time Jimmy is paying the twins a “friendly” visit. When he sees the officer, he’s immediately on guarded. He already considers the twins family. The detective made the mistake of calling the performers freaks and Jimmy did not appreciate his choice of words, “Don’t call us freaks!” Jimmy screamed. The detective’s words triggered rage in Jimmy, so he slashed the officer’s throat in a rage. Jimmy simply wants to be a regular Joe but 1950 Jupiter, Florida is not accepting of people that are “different.”
The episode ends with a Freak Show funeral of sorts for the dead detective! May he rest in peace?!?
Stay tuned for next week’s installment of “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”
